Exhibition Running Through July, 2010

Pen and ink drawings

My drawings are made up of the kinds of marks normally used to form a background, a value difference, a contrast or texture of some kind, subordinated to a larger drawing. In my work, those marks exist for their own sake; they tell their own stories, no longer lost in a superordinate narrative.
I like to work with a set of formal elements: the shape/size of marks, their arrangement on the paper, the distance between the marks, the density of the layers if the drawing is built up using multiple layers, the edges of the drawing and the activity of the marks at the edges, and so on. Additionally, since I use a traditional dip pen to create the marks, I take advantage of the subtle variation of each new dip to modulate the drawing.
I am also intrigued by how we experience time, how we put together all the temporal bits of an experience which is then felt as one, in its entirety. Even though a great deal of such bits have gone into creating many of these drawings, the visual experience when I look at the completed piece is always sudden, timeless, and complete. I intend my work to be about that contrast, about how simple, discrete marks transform into a meaningful whole.
Finally, I am most at home using pen and sumi ink on paper; I'm drawn to the expressive potential of black and gray marks on paper, and the huge variety in the anatomy of marks and lines created by an old-fashioned nib dipped in ink. And although I love color, I seem to be happiest creating my visual objects using the most limited palette of all.
